The Joshitai, or "Women's Corps," refers to a group of female combatants who served in various capacities during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. Comprised primarily of young Okinawan women, the Joshitai were tasked with roles such as nursing, communications, and support duties, while some also engaged in direct combat against invading Allied forces.
The Joshitai's contributions to the defense of Okinawa exemplify the sacrifices made by Okinawans during the war and the resilience of civilians thrust into the midst of conflict. Their story highlights the often-overlooked role of women in wartime and serves as a testament to the strength and fortitude of those who courageously served their communities in times of crisis.
